The Software Construction
Company (SCC) has created a complete workflow content
management system based on its MediaServer, MediaFactory,
and MediaGrid suite of software. The combination of these
components creates a system that is ideally suited for the
newspaper and magazine publishing industry.
The system is designed around an industry standard SQL
relational database with the ability to support very large
numbers of stored files and with large numbers of concurrent
users accessing the system across a wide area network. The
system has a development cycle that is inline with and
highly focused on the future requirements of newspapers,
magazine publishers and large scale corporations.
This section provides a brief overview of the SCC
MediaServer product and its components, identifying some of
the benefits it brings to a professional publishing workflow
environment.
MediaServer
SCC MediaServer is a fully integrated Text, Photo, PDF Page,
Graphics, Sound and Video storage management system,
comprising of an industry standard SQL relational database
and incorporating free-text search technology licensed from
Autonomy Inc. Access to the MediaServer database is from the
SCC MediaGrid client (for Windows and Macintosh) or from a
standard Web browser. The SCC MediaGrid client, which is
aimed at super users such as Librarians and Photo Editors,
contains many powerful features designed to simplify the
data enhancing, data manipulation and delivery processes.
Files for inclusion in the SCC MediaServer database are
simply saved to one or more 'hot' network directories from
where they are automatically inserted and catalogued within
the database. Text and preview "metadata" is extracted
automatically during insertion and indexed in real-time for
rapid full text searching. Files from live wire feeds can be
simply directed into one or more of these server 'hot'
directories for automatic insertion into the SCC MediaServer
database.
A number of optional MediaServer modules are available
allowing: management of assignments and news budgets;
automated delivery of content to Web sites and online
vendors; hosting of electronic Tearsheets; dynamic
integration with Microsoft Word; offsite MediaServer
database replication; and eCommerce.
MediaFactory
SCC MediaFactory (Windows 9x/Me/NT/200x/XP) is a
multi-channel batch conversion, database insertion, and file
delivery application designed to process text, graphics and
photos originally transmitted from wire services such as
Reuters, AFP, AP, from third-party editorial systems, from
legacy archive systems, from any system exporting data as
NewsML, or saved directly from word processors and image
scanning and manipulation software. MediaFactory controls
much of the server-side workflow processing in the
MediaServer system. During processing MediaFactory extracts
embedded text, thumbnails and preview metadata from JPEG,
TIFF and EPS images, from raw Kodak and Canon digital camera
files, from vector EPS graphics and adverts, as well as
completed pages stored in Acrobat PDF format. Processed
files from MediaFactory can be saved in folders or inserted
directly into the MediaServer database.
MediaGrid
SCC MediaGrid (Windows 9x/Me/NT/200x/XP/MacOS) is a
feature-full multimedia browser application that displays
thumbnail grid or multi-column spreadsheet views of data
files stored within a MediaServer content management system.
The MediaGrid client contains many powerful features
designed to simplify the data enhancing, preview and
compare, print proofing and delivery workflow processes. In
addition to acting as a client to MediaServer, MediaGrid
also supports direct caption editing, soft-cropping, preview
and compare, and proofing of image files stored in one or
more local folders or server volumes.
SCC Plug In Kit
SCC Plug-In Kit (Windows 9x/Me/NT/200x/XP/MacOS) provides an
alternate and greatly improved IPTC caption editing
interface for Adobe Photoshop. The caption interface
supports individual field entry from programmable popup
lists as well as a default caption store and load feature
allowing caption headers to be transferred between images.
The Plug-In Kit also has its own proofer module to allow
rapid printing of image previews complete with full IPTC
caption data and publication specific fields. The Plug-In
Kit also supports automatic cropping of images previously
marked with soft-crop information within the SCC MediaGrid
application.
